What is a Traffic Impact Assessment?

The purpose of a Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) is to assess the impacts of a development on the transport network and identify reasonable solutions to address these impacts. Local Councils or Roads Authorities will ask for a Traffic Impact Assessment/Statement for most Development Applications where there is a need to assess the impact of the development on the surrounding road network.

With few exceptions, all developments result in changes to vehicle and/or pedestrian movements. If a development abuts an arterial road, these movements can disrupt through traffic resulting in reduced levels of safety and efficiency.

A TIA summarises the expected outcomes and identifies works or changes needed to handle the movement effects of development and may be a comprehensive study of traffic impacts of a significant development or a short statement of effect for a small proposal.
